Irene G. Ramey was born in Shiner, Texas on March 2, 1921. She earned her diploma in nursing from the Jefferson Davis Hospital School of Nursing (Houston, TX) in 1942. She went on to earn her B.S.N. and M.A. in 1958 from Columbia University and her Ph.D. in 1968 from New York University. Dr. Ramey was a clinical nurse in Texas and New York before becoming a nursing instructor at New York University in 1967. On October 1, 1908, the University of Minnesota Board of Regents authorized the establishment of a nursing program as part of the University's curriculum. The school opened in March 1909, graduating its first class in 1912. In 1919, a five-year program leading to a baccalaureate degree in nursing began.
